How ratings work
- Method
- Every elite team is ranked on each stat in a unit (1 is best). A team's unit average is the mean of those ranks, and the rating ranks the averages again: the lowest average is #1. A rating is meant to measure a unit rather than a scoreline, so its play-by-play stats leave garbage time out. The tables of statistics count every snap, which is why a team can rate better than its raw numbers read (or worse).
- Offense
- Points per game; Yards per game; Yards per play; EPA per play; Success rate; Explosive play rate; 3rd down pct; Turnovers per game.
- Rushing offense
- Yards per carry; Rushing yards per game; Rush EPA per play; Rush success rate; Explosive run rate (10+); Rushing TDs per game.
- Passing offense
- Yards per pass attempt; Passing yards per game; Completion pct; Pass EPA per dropback; Pass success rate; Explosive pass rate (20+); Passing TDs per game; Interception rate.
- Offensive line
- Sack rate allowed; Stuff rate (runs for no gain or a loss); Line yards per carry; Power success (3rd/4th or goal to go, 1-2 yards).
- Offensive success
- Success rate; Rush success rate; Pass success rate; Standard-down success rate; Passing-down success rate; 3rd down pct.
- Defense
